🐯The Tiger who came to Tea 🐯 . . I gave the tiger (toddler) my phone, and told her to scroll through all my Instagram saved recipes. She chose ‘Yahnili Makarna with Hellim’ (Pasta in a sauce with Halloumi) and basically made today the best day ever. This is one of the 10,000 recipes that I’ve bookmarked to make from the super talented and lovely Meliz from @melizcooks 👩🏻‍🍳 If you aren’t following her yet- you can thank me later 😉 . See my little one in action on my stories, chopping onions (using her fab @foost.com.au knife) and stirring the sauce for the chicken. 🍗 She was so involved in every step of this recipe, and kept telling me how she couldn’t wait to eat it - for a child who dislikes tomato and onion- this was interesting. 🤔 Well, she ate every mouthful on her plate, and polished off a second helping. Having children help in the kitchen is such a brilliant way of exposing them to ingredients they may not usually enjoy eating 👍🏻 . We went with all the hearts...! . 🥕🥒Cucumber & carrots 🍎 Apple 🍓Raspberries & blueberries 🧀 Cubes of cheddar 🌯 Homemade beetroot wraps with houmous, ham & spinach 🌶 Red peppers with cream cheese . . The beetroot wraps are my favourite new thing. We get through wraps A LOT in this house, but the supermarket varieties seem to be full of a lot of random (and scary) nonsense. So, I turned to one of my faves, @littlekiwilunchbox for her wrap inspiration. Check out her blog for her recipe, and in my stories I’ll show you how I put them together. 🍌Banana rice cakes🍌 . . There are a few more of you following along today, so thank you, and hello! 👋🏻 I’m Rachel, Mum to a 3 year old and a 16 month old 👶🏼👧🏼 Daddy is a #type1diabetic so all of our recipes are refined sugar free, but as delicious as ever 👍🏻 . . Thanks to the wonderful Jo from @babyledkitchen for making my guest recipe from her app today - it’s such a quick recipe and only 3 ingredients 🍌🥚🍚 . I’m happy she reminded me about these as I’ve not made them for a little while. Today I also added in a tsp of cacao and pressed a berry into each rice cake 👍🏻👍🏻 This was a super simple upgrade, that both girls appear to be approving of 😄 (berry smears up the walls, but I’m ignoring them...) . Just remember, if you are serving cooked berries to little ones, press them down to pop them before serving, or they will retain boiling liquid inside them 😮 . . 🥕Afternoon snack plate 🥑 . . It’s true. Kids do surprise you, and no one day is EVER the same. . . My raw veg avoiding toddler had put in a well timed snack request, so I thought a little platter was in order. At this point in the afternoon, I usually offer a rice cake with houmous, or chopped apple/banana with nut butter. Today I went with some leftover chopped veggies and a little mashed avo to dip into. 🥑 . My expectations 👉🏻 strawberries swiped first, carrot nibbled then ignored, maybe a bean or two eaten, and then maybe the baby would dig in to the avo. The peppers would no doubt be flung aside in order to reach the precious strawbs. ❌ Wrong! . I lay the plate down, and then walked away. The baby reached for a couple of strawberries and then gathered up all of the beans. My toddler went straight for the carrot, and then grabbed the avo and scooped the flesh out. When I reminded her that her sister might like some, so scooped some out and fed it to her 🤣 and then carried on her merry way. Then, the overlooked pepper was pounced upon by both of them- when I asked my toddler to describe it to me in two words, she said ‘juicy’ and ‘best pepper ever’ 😵 Okay, we need to work on her counting skills- but she ate the pepper and asked me to chop more. This is a huge change. Of course tomorrow it’ll all be different, but I’m taking it today! . I realised that leaving them to it (obviously I was watching like a hawk, but they don’t know that 😉) and letting them find their own merry way, played a big part in the success of this platter. Also keeping it simple, and straightforward helped them to identify what was there and what they wanted to take. .
